Photography Activities for Middle School Students

In this section of this website you will have access to different photography activities that promote multiple forms of literacy, both within the standards but also with other educational benefits.  Photography give students the opportunity to explore the world around them. It became a way for students to see past the confines of an assignment and look deeper into the meaning of the texts.

Who Are You?

Students will be asked to reflect on what identity means to them. They will then be asked to do a pictorial representation of their own identity. The students will present their pictorial representations in a creative manner. The main focus of this activity is to ask the question 'what forms a person’s identity?'

What Images Stand Out?

Within this activity the students will be asked to read a short story, storyboard the images from the story that stand out in sequence, find or create photographs that tell the narrative of the story, and as a final project create a class mural using selected images each student found and/or created to tell the original short story. The main goal of this activity is to use visual literacy to tell a story with no words.
