Theatre Activities for Middle School Students

In this section of this website you will have access to different theatre activities that promote multiple types of literacy, both within the standards but also with other educational benefits.  Theatre helps students feel more connected to the material. It allows students to incorporate their body, mind, and emotions into a project that can push beyond a text. It involves people in a way that is unexpected and engaging. 

It's Alive

Within this activity students will be asked to choose a character from a book and bring it to life. Starting with words, then with the students bodies, and finally with words again.  Students will be asked to delve deeper into the character’s of a book they are reading in class. The students will work on empathy within character development.

Performing a Poem

This activity is about acting out/embodying a poem. This would be most effective in a section specifically on poetry and/or sonnets. Students will have the opportunity to embody a poem to better understand what goes behind the poem.

Tableaus

This activity is an addition to a theatre activity within the Theatre (Elementary) section of this website. As a modification for the Story Dramatization and Tableaus activity, students will be asked to create frozen images with their bodies to pinpoint the important images that stand out. This activity will be focusing on the main ideas of Tableau: Body Language, Eye Contact, and Levels.
