Theatre Activites for Elementary Students

In this section of this website you will have access to different theatre activities that promote different types of literacy, both within the standards but also with other educational benefits.  Theatre helps students feel more connected to the material. It allows students to incorporate their body, mind, and emotions into a project that can push beyond a text. It involves people in a way that is unexpected and engaging.

Poetry in Motion

Poetry and theatre go hand in hand. By acting out a poem students are able to embody the rhythm and movement of the poem being read. This activity gives you guidelines into how to constructively have students act out/mime what is being said in a poem.

Story Dramatization and Tableaus

Story Dramatization allows students to step into a characters shoes and encourages empathy through embodiment of different perspectives. In this activity,
students will use their bodies to enact important moments within a story, first through acting out the story as it is being told and then by creating tableaus, which are frozen images.

Illustrations: The Gateway to Storytelling
Illustrations for young people are incredibly important when  reading a story. It allows them to dive deeper into the story by giving beautiful imagery to the words being told. What if we work backwards starting with images and then creating text. In this activity, students will explain what is happening in an illustration by analyzing clues within an image and then create their own story.
